West Coast students get an early taste of Orange

Incoming SU students at the New Student Send-Off event

Incoming first-year students received an early taste of the Orange while attending New Student Send-Off events on the West Coast this summer. The meet-and-greet gatherings, which unite students, parents, and alumni, are popular with first-year and transfer students eager to learn about life at SU.

Rob Light ’78 and his wife Shelly hosted the Southern California send-off event for more than 180 incoming students, parents, current students and alumni at their Encino home in August. “Shelly and I LOVE hosting the New Student Send-Off. I believe the Syracuse experience is educational, social, nurturing and inclusive—and one that lasts a lifetime! To a college-bound young person (and their parents), the first SU experience sets the tone, and we want it to be special, which is why we host and enjoy this event.”

The send-off events allow incoming students get to know other students, meet current students and alumni who answer their questions, get the inside scoop on what to expect during their first few weeks at SU, and learn more about their upcoming SU experience,

“New Student Send-Offs are a great way for students to meet other students and to know they are not alone in leaving home and moving across the country,” said Joan Adler G’76, Assistant VP Regional Programs—Los Angeles. “We hope they can start to form those important SU bonds that will carry them through SU and beyond.”
