LA Semester hosts industry roundtable
September 1, 2015
Syracuse University Los Angeles and the SULA Semester program held an Industry Roundtable in the Rita Hayworth Dining Room at Sony Studios in Culver City, CA on Aug. 26. Sixty students currently participating in the SULA Semester program had the opportunity to connect with nine television and music industry professionals – including eight SU alumni – in our first ever “Speed Networking” event.
The event included a short panel discussion followed by three rounds of break-out sessions that allowed the professionals to speak with smaller groups of 8-10 students at a time. The students were stationed at assigned tables based on their career interests (TV writing, producing, directing, music industry, etc.) and the panelists spent 25-30 minutes with their assigned group before moving on to the next table.
“We felt a smaller more intimate setting might be less intimidating for the students and might lead to some real conversations. The students loved it…and gave the event very high marks,” said Robin Howard, Director of the SULA Semester.
Speakers included Doug Robinson ’85, the Newmark brothers: Dan Newmark ’04 and Ben Newmark ’04, the James sisters: JaNeika James G’05 and JaSheika James, Jennifer Freed ’03, Jamie Rhonheimer ’96, Leonard R. Garner, Jr. ’74, and Phil Quartararo ’77.
